William Burk Rhoades

William 'Burk' Rhoades, 91 passed away peacefully in his home July 1, 2015 in Woodburn, Oregon.

He was born to George Edward and Grace Alta (Bowers) Rhoades on September 20, 1923 in Kettle Falls, Washington. The family moved to the Santiam area of Oregon in 1931. After his father's passing the family moved to Woodburn in 1939 and he attended Woodburn High School. Burk enlisted in the United States Army in 1942 and trained as an Amphibious Engineer. He was involved in several of the campaigns in the South Pacific during WWII. He quickly moved up the ranks to Staff Sergeant and was honorably discharged as a decorated soldier after the war ended in 1946. He went on to telegraph school and began a lifelong career as a station agent for Southern Pacific Railroad working at various depots in the Willamette Valley. He was the last station agent to work at the Woodburn depot, where he first served.

He married Janet Margaret McCaffrey on March 18, 1956. They made Woodburn their home, where they raised their four children. He will be remembered as a great cook and host for family gatherings and his big vegetable garden that he shared with neighbors, friends, and family. Burk loved to be surrounded by his family and loved his dogs.

He is survived by his wife and children, son William (Kimberley) West Linn, Robert (Tracy), Kiezer, Gary, Salem, daughter Janelle (David) Hoshaw, Wilsonville and 6 grandchildren Kiger, Karah, Jabez, Zander, Hunter, TJ, and his brother Timothy Rhoades, Everett WA and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, and sister Elsie Jamieson, brothers Edward, Roland, Harold, and Byron.

Visitation will be from 1-4 Thursday July 9, 2015 at Cornwell Colonial Chapel Wilsonville. Church services with be held Friday July 10, 2015 at 10:30 am at the Woodburn United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be Tuesday July 14, 2015 at 1:00 pm Willamette National Cemetery with military honors. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Shriner's Children's Hospital or the Woodburn United Methodist Church.
