Vera Rose (Kahut) Bernt traded her earthly home for her Heavenly home on January 10, 2016. She died at the age of 90 from natural causes in her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born June 17, 1925 in Woodburn and for most of her life lived in the Woodburn/Gervais area other than a short time in Minneapolis MN with her first husband LeRoy Hagen, who preceded her in death.
Vera was the mother of 7 children, Lyman Hagen (Sue), Chico CA; Karen Slyter (Frank), Newberg OR; Ronald Bernt (Sue), Sublimity OR; Judy Hill (Dave), Seattle WA; Gloria Carter, Keizer OR; Debbie Samples (Rex), Canby OR and Cathy Domogalla (Steve), Salem OR. She was also the grandmother to 25 grandchildren and to 11 great grandchildren she was grandma the great.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Edward J. Bernt, who "coincidentally" died January 10, 1995, 21 years prior. She was also preceded in death by 2 brothers and 3 sisters and is survived by her sister and brother-in-law Marlene and Max Ruef and many nieces and nephews.
Vera was a hard worker all of her life who passed on that work ethic to her children and grandchildren. Vera was known for her many years of catering but most famous for her prize Potato Salad, which was once sold at a school auction for $800.
More important than her catering business was her volunteerism to her Church, School and Community where she gave countless hours of her time. She was recognized many times for her generosity and outstanding service.
But above all, was her devotion to God, family and friends.
