While in Seattle, she met her future husband, Archie Mathias, a soldier in the US Army, and they were married on June 25, 1948. Ruth worked as a nurse, supporting her husband through college and seminary. He became a pastor in the Free Methodist Church and for the next 40 plus

She worked tirelessly at her husband's side during his ministry, calling in homes, singing in the choir, serving as parsonage hostess, and holding every church position from church custodian and gardener to Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher and Women's Missionary
Society president. Their marriage lasted 49 years. When Archie passed away, Ruth moved to Woodburn to be near her daughter and family. While attending the Salem First Free Methodist Church, she met Robert Arnold, a member there, when they learned together to visit the shut-ins.
