Robert "Bob" Boonstra passed away peacefully on July 13th. Born on June 30, 1942, in Granville, Michigan, to Bonita and Lester Boonstra, Bob spent his early years in Michigan before his family—including siblings Jerry, Linda, and Randy—eventually made their home in Tampa, Florida.
Shortly after graduating from high school, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, drawn by the promise of furthering his education. While stationed in Portland, he met the love of his life, Sally. After completing his service and earning an engineering degree from Oregon State University, Bob and Sally built a life together, raising their family in the Pacific Northwest ultimately settling in Canby.
Professionally, Bob was an accomplished engineer with a passion for innovation. Throughout his career, he contributed to numerous groundbreaking medical device projects. One of the highlights of his work was being part of the team that developed the first portable defibrillators—life-saving devices. During the mid 80's his company, Medac, was instrumental in getting defibrillators out of the hospital and into ambulances. These portable devices are now found in most schools as well as public and government buildings. His contributions in the field continue to impact lives every day.
Beyond his professional achievements, Bob was deeply committed to his community. He coached youth sports, officiated meets for the local swim team, and was a devoted Christian, occasionally delivering the sermon at church in the pastors absence. In retirement, his passion for helping others only grew—he was instrumental in founding both a preschool and a community dinner program in Canby. Bob's warmth, determination, and generous spirit touched countless lives and leave a lasting legacy.
He is survived by his wife, Sally; siblings Linda and Randy; children Mike, Rick, and Sue; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
