Obituario de Miguel Luna

Miguel Francisco Luna Matas nació el 3 de diciembre, 1962 en Tecapán, Usultán, El Salvador. Renació cuando el edificio en lo cual todos los archivos oficiales se guardaron era destruido en un incendio y el gobierno le asignó la fecha de nacimiento 6 de enero, lo cual ha sido su cumpleaños legal desde este entonces. Sus padres eran Roslaio Luna y Maria Luciía Matas Cardona. Miguel era el segundo de 13 hijos: José Eduardo, Juan, Ana, Cristina, Luisa, Rey, Teresa, David, Daniel, Samuel, Elvis, and Milton.
Bautizado como infante en la Iglesia de Tecapán Concepción, Miguel se convertió en un serio creyente Cristiano cuando a la edad de 14, fue sanado milagrosamente de una hernia por un evangelista. Desde ese incidente fue tan activo en su congregación que a la edad de 18 lo enviaron a Pozón, California, El Salvador para levantar una congregación allá. A la edad de 19 Miguel vino al EEUU como refugiado. Vivía en Los Angeles donde estaba miembro activo de la iglesia Príncipe de Paz, sirviendo como presidente de jóvenes, y luego presidente de hombres y diacono. Allá conoció a Marta. Se casaron en junio de 1991. La iglesia les envió a Woodburn para levantar una congregación, que hicieron. Mientras sirviendo como pastor, trabajaba construyendo casas manufacturadas.
Miguel estudió la teología al Instituto Teológico del Noroeste en Newberg, y servía como pastor de la congregación Principe de Paz en Woodburn por ocho años.
En 2002 los Luna se separaron de la iglesia Príncipe de Paz, y a través de la amistad y bajo la tutela del Rev. Bruce Zagel, se convirtieron en miembros de la iglesia Hope Lutheran. Al pedido de la congregación el Pr. Miguel inició adoración en español en Hope el 30 de Marzo, 2003.

En 2016 dimitió sus llamados a Trinity, Ascension, y Hope cuando su enfermedad lo impediría de trabajar más. Aunque no podía servir oficialmente, continuaba en oración, y ayudaba por preparar estudios bíblicos y participar tanto como su salud lo permitía.
Disfrutaba mucho la pesca, estar afuera, ir a la playa, y mirar la lucha libre en TV.
La familia da gracias al programa Soldados de la Cruz y al Distrito Noroeste de la LCMS por su apoyo la temporada de la enfermedad.
Pastor Miguel deja a su esposa, la Diaconisa Marta Luna, y sus hijas, Keyla (23), Raquel (21), y Chelsea (9).

Miguel Francisco Luna Matas was born December 3, 1962 in Tecapán, Usultán, El Salvador. He was re-born when the building where all the town's records were kept was destroyed in a fire and the government assigned him the birth date of January 6, which has been his official birthday ever since. His parents were Rosalio Luna and Maria Lucía Matas Cardona. Miguel was the second of thirteen children: José Eduardo, Juan, Ana, Cristina, Luisa, Rey, Teresa, David, Daniel, Samuel, Elvis, and Milton.
Baptized as an infant at the Iglesia de Tecapán Concepción, Miguel became a serious protestant Christian believer at age fourteen when he was miraculously healed of a hernia by a visiting evangelist. He became active in his Pentecostal congregation and at age 18 was sent to Pozón, California, El Salvador, to found a church. The congregation known as Monte de Sión is still a lively congregation to this day.
While founding the church in Pozón, Miguel studied accounting and business management at the Liseo Cultural San Tiagueño.
At age 19 Miguel came to the U.S. as a refugee. He lived in Los Angeles where he became an active member of Príncipe de Paz church, serving as president of the youth, then president of the men, and then as a deacon. It was there he met and married Marta in June of 1991. The church sent the young couple to Woodburn to start a congregation, which they did. While serving as pastor he also worked full time constructing manufactured homes.
Miguel studied theology at the Instituto Teológico del Noroeste, in Newberg and served as pastor of the Principe de Paz congregation in Woodburn for eight years.
In 2002 the Luna's separated from Príncipe de Paz, and through the friendship and tutoring of Rev. Bruce Zagel, they became members of Hope Lutheran Church. At the request of the Hope congregation, Pr. Miguel began conducting Spanish worship services March 30, 2003.
Early in 2003 Pr. Miguel and Marta began evangelism work through Lutheran Latino Ministries for Hope Lutheran in Woodburn, Trinity Lutheran in Mt. Angel, and Trinity and Ascension in Portland. They provided Bible studies, made home visits, and gradually drew the Hispanic people into the Lutheran Church. At the same time Pr. Miguel began working toward colloquy to become a Lutheran Pastor by studying in what was then known as the Lay Assistant Program (now the Mission Training Center). In December 2005 he was licensed as a Lay Deacon to provide Word and Sacrament ministry among the Hispanic people under the supervision of Rev. David Harms in Woodburn, Rev. Ron Hues in Mt. Angel, and Rev. Mark Hoelter and Rev. Dennis Bohren in Portland. Pastor Miguel was also mentored by Rev. Wally Misterek and Rev. Arthur Olson.
In September of that year Lutheran Latino Ministries hired Pr. Miguel and Marta to serve as Circuit Rider Missionaries to continue the work they had been doing
as volunteers. In February 2008, with the help of his mentors District President Rev. Warren Schumacher, Pr. Miguel was certified as a pastor in the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod. September 7, 2008 he was ordained and served as Circuit Rider Missionary Pastor serving the four congregations listed above.
In addition to serving the four congregations, Pr. Miguel and Marta made two trips to Trinity Lutheran Church in Eden, Idaho to assist with the development of outreach to the Latino people there.
Pr. Miguel and Marta have been involved in all five of the National Hispanic Ministry Conventions of the LCMS, and have established many friendships with Hispanic pastors and deaconesses, and missionaries throughout the US.
In 2014 Pr. Luna resigned his call to Trinity – Mt. Angel because the Hispanic people from there decided to worship Sundays in Woodburn. In 2016 he resigned his calls to Trinity and Ascension in Portland, and Hope in Woodburn when it became clear that his illness would prevent him from serving any longer. Although he was no longer officially serving, he continued in prayer for all of his flock, and helped by preparing Bible studies and participating as much as his health would allow.
Miguel loved going fishing, being outdoors, going to the beach, and watching wrestling on TV.
The family is grateful to the Soldiers of the Cross program and the Northwest District of the LCMS for their assistance during Miguel's illness.
Pastor Miguel is survived by his wife, Deaconess Marta Luna, and his daughters, Keyla (23), Raquel (21), and Chelsea (9).
