Maxine Gertrude Douglas passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 25th at the age of 95. Maxine grew up on a small farm near Hubbard, Oregon. She was one of four children of John and Esther Schaber. Her rural upbringing very much influenced her love of nature and outdoor activities. She fondly recalled swimming in the Pudding River and riding bikes with her siblings. In later years she became a master gardener earning prizes for her landscaping abilities.
Maxine and her Husband Al (Doug) Douglas married in 1951. They made their first home in Portland and then later moved, first, to Canyon Creek in Wilsonville and then on to a 10 acre ranch near Donald, Oregon where they raised cattle. When Doug retired from System 99 as a truck driver, they moved to Central Oregon where they enjoyed many outdoor activities like hiking, swimming and bike riding where Maxine was always way ahead of the rest of the group.
In 2000 Maxine and Doug move to Senior Estates in Woodburn to be close to family as Doug's health was failing. Unfortunately, Doug passed away shortly after their move. Maxine made her life there for the next 22 years where she had many friends and enjoyed the clubhouse pool where she swam one quarter mile everyday until a couple of years ago. Needless to say, Maxine was an excellent swimmer, a skill she had honed years earlier in the Pudding River. She even had an opportunity to swim with a dolphin when vacationing with her granddaughter, Angela and great-granddaughter, Felicia in Florida.
Maxine's faith was the foundation of her life. She devoutly read the Bible and Daily Bread everyday and held all of her family and friends in her prayers. She will be missed by her entire family and friends.
Maxine is survived by her brother, John Schaber; her son, Ken Thrasher; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren (with twins on the way!). She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred (Doug); brother Darwin Schaber; sister Vernice Brower; and son, Randy Douglas.
Your life was love and labour,
Your love for your family true,
Your did your best for all of us,
We will always remember you.
