Mary Virginia Livingston was born in North Carolina on July 2, 1918, the youngest of 5 children, 3 brothers and a sister (all deceased). At the age of 6 her parents died of tuberculosis, and she was placed in an orphanage in Florida, along with her brothers and sisters. After a short period of time they were adopted by the Tindall family in Jordan, Montana. She traveled by herself across the country on a train, to be with her new family. In 1936 she married William Frederick Zyp, who was also her High School basketball coach. In 1942 her first son, William Leslie was born, and in 1946 her second son, Tom Carl, was born. Also in 1946 she and her family moved to Oregon and eventually settled in Woodburn, where she was the secretary for the MacLaren School for Boys, where her husband Bill was teacher and Vice Principal. In 1974, she and her husband retired, and in 1975 her husband passed away. After her retirement she did extensive travel to China, Japan, Hawaii, and toured the United States. More recently she moved to a retirement home in Hillsboro, near her son Tom. At her passing, she had four grandchildren -- Cathleen, Kris, Kari, Scott -- and five great-grandchildren -- Dutch, Jennika, Heidi, Korban, Wallace. She passed away peacefully, on July 12, 2016. She will be lovingly remembered for her total devotion to family.
