Mary Josephine Halter was born July 18, 1945 at Salem to Louis and Josephine( Haug )Schmerber. Entire childhood was spent on River Rd near Gervais .Attended Eldridge Grade School for first 4 years. Then went to Sacred Heart Grade School 5th- 8th grade. Graduated from Mt. Angel Academy in 1963, then onto Mt. Angel College for one year.Married Edward Halter on July 3, 1965. Three children were born from Nov. 1966-May 1972.Lived in the area entire married life, from Woodburn to St. Louis, then back to Woodburn. Other life's accomplishments: In the 80's Mary went back to school and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education in 1984 at Portland State University. She taught 7th & 8th grades at St. Luke Elementary for five years.Mary then continued teaching at French Prairie Middle School in Woodburn. She received a Master of Science in Curriculum and Instruction in 1996 and then continued teaching at French Prairie until her retirement in 2001.She belonged to Red Hats, Walking club and Painting GroupShe is survived by her husband Edward and children; Michelle Cain of Damascus, OR, Theresa Halter -Enyart of Astoria, OR and Paul Halter of Longmont, Colorado, siblings; Karl Schmerber, Rosalie Schmidt, John Schmerber, Lou Schmerber, Barbara Reding, David Schmerber and Julie Gust.Preceded in death by parents and one sister; Ruth Schmerber, Visitation will be held Mon.
