Obituary

Marlin Ellis Hammond, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and great great grandfather passed peacefully Friday, October 22, 2021, at 97 years of age with his family by his side.

Marlin is survived by his wife of 77 years, Arlene of Woodburn, OR. Daughter Ronda Divers (Mike Moody) of Lake Oswego, OR & family Jeff Divers, Tonya Divers & family Cody & Jordan. Ross Divers (Tiffany) & family McKenzie (Tyler Hesselgesser) & family Addison & Greysen and David Divers. Alice (Joe Bayless) & family Brock & Graham. Amelia (Chris Safley) & family Macy & Reid. Daughter JoAnne (Chuck Krause) of Richland, WA & family Abby (Thad Nelson) & family Julie, Clara & Johan. Ginny (Josh Skipper) & family Aurora, Troy & Kendall. Emily (Tyler Pickel) & Family Francis Marlin, Garnet and Howard, and Victor Krause. Daughter Karen (Paul Kirsch) of St. Paul, OR & family Jill (Jerod Verboort) & family, Lila Arlene & Gwen. Brenda (Matt Frketich) & family Hoot, Auggie & Millie, Kyle Kirsch (Elisha) & family Oliver & Hannah. Son Dean Hammond (Sue) of Salem, OR & family Mindi (Ross Stadelman) & family Cora & Maeve, Katie (Gunnar Cederberg) & family Cade. Kristin (Tony Canales) & family Adrian. Sara (Jered Halter) & family Colton & Emerson.

Marlin was born February 18, 1924, attended Grassy Pond Grade School near Monitor, OR and graduated from Woodburn High School in 1942. While in school he served as Student Body President & was a three-sport athlete. Marlin joined the US Navy in 1944 & fought in World War II in the Pacific theater aboard LST 1104 as a machinist mate first class. He married Arlene Coleman March 26, 1944, her 20th Birthday. Marlin farmed berries and vegetables east of Woodburn until 1969 employing many of the community youth in his harvests. In 1959 he was honored as Oregon's Outstanding Young Farmer. Marlin sold real estate for 4 years until turning his attention to building. Marlin built many homes, including the Methodist Church parsonage in Woodburn along with medical facilities and numerous remodels in the area. Marlin was active in his community, serving on the Marion County Planning Commission, Belle Passe Cemetery Board, Woodburn High School Budget Committee. He was a principal in the formation of the Woodburn Industrial Park and is a past President of the Woodburn Rotary Club.

Marlin and Arlene traveled extensively with trips to Canada, Mexico, Australia & New Zealand and RVed starting in a Caveman camper, to 49 states, but never made Vermont. They snow birded to Gila Mountain RV Park in Yuma, AZ for 32 years where Marlin loved to golf, scoring 3 holes in one and play shuffleboard. In addition, Marlin loved gardening, cribbage, pinochle, billiards, fishing, hunting and most of all he loved the time he spent with his large family in his later years.

Our family would like to thank the many caregivers and staff of Country Meadows Assisted Living, Brighton Hospice & Dr. Eleanor Zawada for their excellent care of our father.

A family graveside service was held, and a celebration of life is being planned for summer.
