Marlene Adele Johnson, 88, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.

Marlene was born on January 12, 1938, in Chico, California, to David Malcolm Brown and Dortha May White. She grew up alongside her siblings, George, Betty, and Ralph, learning the value of hard work, family, and perseverance from an early age. She often spoke fondly of childhood adventures riding bikes, roller skating, shooting rifles, swimming in creeks, camping on the coast, and helping her mother preserve fruits and vegetables. Those early experiences shaped the work ethic and resilience that would define her life.

Marlene’s life was one of remarkable strength. Married at just 17 years old, she became the mother of five children before finding herself divorced at the age of 23. Faced with raising a young family on her own, she met life’s challenges with determination, courage, and an unwavering commitment to her children. She often described becoming a mother as the greatest and most rewarding job she ever had.

In 1969, she married Charles “Chuck” Johnson. Together they blended their family, eventually raising seven children. Through years of sacrifice, hard work, and faith, they built a loving home where family always came first. Marlene often reflected on Chuck’s tireless dedication to providing for their family and credited him with being one of the most important people in her life. Their marriage of more than five decades was built on love and perseverance.

Marlene enjoyed a long career with the State of California, where she earned the respect of coworkers and supervisors through her integrity, willingness to learn, and exceptional work ethic. She was grateful for the opportunities that allowed her to provide for her family while continuing to grow professionally.

After retirement, Marlene and Chuck made Oregon their home, where they enjoyed life in a close-knit senior community. She loved reading, golfing, genealogy, and especially visiting the Oregon coast, where she found peace sitting beside the ocean with a good book. Family holidays, particularly Thanksgiving and Christmas, were among her greatest joys, and she delighted in gathering loved ones around the table.

A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Marlene found lasting peace and purpose through her faith. She loved serving in the Church, attending the temple, and researching her family history. She believed deeply in God, the importance of prayer, and the eternal nature of families. Her testimony quietly influenced generations of those she loved.

Above all else, Marlene treasured her family. She often said that perfect happiness meant simply being surrounded by those she loved. She was happiest celebrating holidays together, watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow, and sharing life’s everyday moments. Her greatest wish was for her family to stay close, love one another, and remember the importance of faith and kindness.

Marlene was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Chuck Johnson; her daughter, Kathie; her son, Scott; her sister, Betty; and her brother, George.

She is survived by her brother, Ralph; her children, Steve, Debbie, James, Lisa, and Dave; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; extended family members; and many dear friends whose lives were enriched by her love, wisdom, generosity, and steadfast example.

Those who knew Marlene will remember her for her quiet strength, unwavering faith, deep love of family, and remarkable resilience. She faced life’s hardships with grace, celebrated its blessings with gratitude, and left behind a legacy of perseverance, compassion, and unconditional love.
