Obituary

Katherine Ann Barrett passed away on Thursday, September 5, 2013 at her home with her family by her side in prayer. She was born and raised in Woodburn, Oregon, the daughter of John and Frances Becker. As a child she frequently visited her family's harness shop, later service station and tavern in downtown Woodburn with her dog, Midgie. She spent most of each year in school, but would be outdoors whenever she could playing ball or in the summer when she would be gathering fruits and vegetables to can with her mom. Kathy attended St. Benedict's School in Woodburn, OR and then Mt. Angel Academy in Mt. Angel, OR. Following graduation from Mr. Angel Academy in 1948 she worked for the State of Oregon in Salem, then at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene. A few years later she worked for an agency of the federal government in Santa Rosa, California at the encouragement of her cousin. After several years she returned to Oregon and worked in Portland, again for the federal government. While attending a St. Luke's Church parish dinner, Kathy had a spark of interest in a previous acquaintance, Bob Barrett. They decided that they would go to Wagon Wheel Park to go swimming the next day. They dated for about a year before marrying on June 6, 1959. She continued to work in Portland until the birth of her daughter. She returned to work in 1973 at Bird's Eye cannery until her retirement in 1992.A loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Kathy lived a life that Christ had instructed by her love of God and family and her service to the church and community. She faced the events, challenges, the sorrows and the joys that occurred in her life with profound faith in God's providence and with hope in His goodness. Kathy spent her retirement in several church and civic activities including the Catholic Daughters of the Americas (CDA) since 1960 where she was Catholic Daughter of the year in 2000. Her ministry with CDA included preparing and serving luncheon for bereaved families. She was a Communion minister and a lector at daily mass. She was involved with the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO) for many years. Kathy adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and spent as much time with them as possible. She loved trips to the beach, taking long walks on the sand and sitting by the fire. She was comforted by the sound of the rain on the rooftop. Her hobbies included gardening, crocheting, cooking and bowling. She was very fit and walked about two miles every day.Kathy died of complications from sarcoma and is survived by her husband Bob, daughter Denise, sons Bob and Tom, 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, her brother Fr.
