Donald Saalfeld of Woodburn, Oregon died May 17, 2004. He was 57 years old.Don was born November 9, 1946 in Seattle, Washington to Frank and Florence Saalfeld. He lived the first two years of his life in Mt. Vernon, Washington. His family moved to the Fairfield Landing area of Gervais, where he lived half of his life. He graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic School in 1960 and Gervais High School in 1964. He attended Mt. Angel College 2 years and served in the National Guard from 1966-1972. On June 6, 1967 he married Tobin I. MacGillivray at St. Louis Catholic Church. He worked as a field spray applicator and for Farmer's Oil Company as a fuel truck driver. By 1976 he went back into farming full time. He and his Dad grews cherries, pears, wheat, and grass seed. He and his brother, Mike raised weaner pigs for 16 years under the name Saalfeld brothers.Don and Toby had 9 children. HE was a man passionate about many things: his children, grandchildren, farming and barbershop singing. He was a member of the Canby Pitchpipers for 14 years. He took time off to see his boys play football, basketball, baseball, track and wrestling. If there was an event, he was there. Then he resumed singing with the Salem Senateaires Barbershop Chorus from 1990 until 2001 when he had to quite due to poor health. He was so prooud to sing with a championship chorus and two of his sons and went with them to four international competitions.Don is survived by his mother, Florence of Woodburn, his wife Toby of Woodburn, children Mary Woodry and her husband Ed of Gervais, D. Joseph Saalfeld and his wife Michelle of North Plains, Stephen Saalfeld and his wife Jennifer of Tacoma, WA, Daniel Saalfeld and his wife Melanie of Salem, Kathleen O'Claire and her husband David of Vancouver, WA, Judy Prather and her husband James of Portland, Anne Saalfeld of Salem and Rachel Saalfeld of Woodburn, grandchildren Riley and Mitchell Woodry, Emily, Naomi and Abigail Saalfeld, Hayden and Kendall Saalfeld, Elijah and Isabella Prather and Garrett Saalfeld.He was a member of Sacred Heart-St. Louis Cahtoli Parish in Gervais and Knights of Columbus.
