Obituary

Dolores "Dee" Ann (Smith) McKillip of St. Paul passed away Friday, April 15, 2016. She made her grand entry peacefully at the age of 87 with family by her side.

Raised in St. Paul, Oregon, Dee was the daughter of Maurice and Mae Smith, sister to Shirley (Ernst), Patricia (Kirk), Margaret (McKillip), Nancy (Schneider) and Jerry Smith. She attended school in St. Paul and one year at Marylhurst College, then came back home to marry John McKillip, Jr. of St. Paul. They had seven children: Greg, Tim, Mary Beth (VonRuden), Chris, Scott, Kevin and Karen (Tuck). She had 16 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Growing up, Dee was one that enjoyed a hard day of work in the field. She hoed in the corn, picked berries, beans and hops by hand. Dee was born a cowgirl. She was happiest on the back of a horse, and was often seen riding around town. She competed in the cowgirl's race at the St. Paul Rodeo, which her father was one of the original founders. Her first horse race in the arena was at the age of 10, her last at the age of 73. She was a St. Paul Rodeo princess in 1947 and was a fierce competitor in women's barrel racing. Dee loved to go hunting each year with her husband and friends. She was always a straight shooter, with her gun and her quick wit. Dee was the truck driver for their family business, hauling loads of pigs, sheep and calves from the auction yard and loads of grain and grass seed to the mill. Her husband John passed away in 1983. Dee drove school bus for St. Paul School District and was a loyal Buckaroo fan at sporting events. All through the years, she was a beloved second mom to many of her nieces, nephews and children's friends. She stayed active as a volunteer member of the St. Paul Rodeo Association and St. Paul Catholic Church. Dee was honored to be inducted into the St. Paul Rodeo Hall of Fame in 2002 and St. Paul School District Hall of Fame in 2015. She will be remembered for her spunk, humor, fearlessness and her passionate, dedication to the St. Paul community and rodeo.

Funeral mass will be Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at 11:00am at St. Paul Catholic Church, interment following at St. Paul Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Rodeo Foundation or the St. Paul Parochial School general fund. Arrangements by Simon-Cornwell Colonial Chapel, www.cornwellcolonial.com
