Obituary

Dennis Roy Wernberg, 71, of Wilsonville, Oregon died Monday evening, July 15, 2013 at Kaiser Sunnyside Hospital in Clackamas, Oregon. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 19th, at Community of Hope Lutheran Church, Wilsonville, Oregon. Family and friends are invited to attend a reception immediately following the church ceremony to be held at the church. Dennis was born October 10, 1941, in Blackduck, Minnesota, to Emmett and Caroline Lillian (Schwegel) Wernberg. He grew up on a farm in rural Blackduck. He attended college at Bemidji State, Bemidji, Minnesota, for two years, before entering the University of Minnesota Institute of Technology where he earned a BS degree in Mathematics. He spent two years of work towards a Master's Degree. On April 9th, 1966, he married Betty Jean Sackreiter in Watertown, South Dakota. In the fall of 1966 they moved from Minneapolis to Hartford, Connecticut, where Denny started his first job at United Aircraft Research Labs. During their three years living in Hartford, they made several lifelong friends. In the summer of 1969, a new job offer with Sperry Univac brought them back to Minnesota . Expecting their first child, they settled in the Twin Cities intending to make this location their permanent home. Three weeks after Natalie was born in November of 1969, Denny was told he, along with 40 other families, were being transferred to Salt Lake City, Utah. They moved to Salt Lake City in the summer of 1970, where they lived for almost 25 years. Many cherished friendships were formed during those years. Their second daughter, Michelle, was born in March of 1972. Denny enjoyed raising his daughters and spending time together as a family. The family enjoyed camping, hiking, skiing, music, and playing games together. After eight and a half years with Sperry Univac, Denny left to join friends at a startup software company, Libra Corporation, where he was employed for seventeen years. He valued hard work and was dedicated to his career. In 1994 he was recruited to join ADP Dealer Services, in Portland, Oregon, and they moved to Wilsonville. In 1998 ADP sent him to work for three months in Veijle, Denmark. During that time, he and Betty enjoyed traveling throughout Scandinavia and northern Europe, visiting towns of their ancestors. Denny retired from ADP in June of 2011. Since his retirement Denny enjoyed playing cards and cribbage at the Community Center, riding his bicycle, daily walks with Betty , visits to see the grandkids in Washington state, and traveling back to Utah, Minnesota, and other states to visit family and friends. He was an avid reader and had a lifelong intellectual curiosity about many topics. Throughout his life he was an active member in his Lutheran church congregations. He taught Bethel Bible Study and Sunday School in SLC, and served on church council and various other committees. He was an active member of Community of Hope, Wilsonville, since 1995. Shortly before his retirement Denny was diagnosed with a thoracic aortic aneurysm. He underwent successful surgery in December of 2010. We were grateful to have two more happy years together as a family before he passed away due to a dissection of his descending aorta on July 15th, 2013. He is survived by his wife, Betty; daughters, Natalie (Matt) Holm and Michelle (Jeremy) Hughes; three grandchildren, Chandler, Hannah and Lily; two brothers, Lonnie (Vonnie) Wernberg of Blackduck, Minnesota and Marvin Wernberg of Brainerd, Minnesota. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two infant twin brothers.
