Dr. Holmes was a native of Oregon, born in Portland in 1925. Upon graduation from Franklin High School, David entered the U.S. Navy for college training and as an Aviation Cadet. He was commissioned as a Naval Aviator in December 1945. With the end of WWII, he returned home to finish college and graduated from Willamette University with a B.S. in Chemistry in June 1948. He worked as a Chemist at the Hanford Works in Richland, Washington for four years before pursuing a career in medicine. He attended the University of Oregon Medical School (Now called OHSU) becoming a physician in 1956. After completing his Internship he practiced General Medicine in Roseville, California, John Day, Silverton and Molalla, Oregon. By 1972, Dr. Holmes had completed additional training at OHSU and was Board Certified in Anesthesiology. He was a staff Anesthesiologist at Legacy Meridian Park Hospital in Tualatin, Oregon from the time the hospital opened its doors until 1993.Due to his lifetime interest in aviation Dr. Holmes was an active member of the Columbia Aviation Association and a Senior Aviation Medical Examiner for the FAA from 1960 until his retirement. David was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Addie (Snoddy) Holmes in 1995 and his son David Jr. in 2008. He is survived by daughter Patricia and her husband Robert Langdon of Boise, Idaho and four grandchildren; Shannon Narasimhan, Ariel Narasimhan, Evan Narasimhan, and Lisa (Philip) Holzwarth. Dr. Holmes touched many lives and will be remembered fondly by all who new him.His cremains will be interned with honors at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Tuesday October 29th at 10:00am.
