He graduated from West Linn High School in 1946 and lived in West Linn until 1991, when he moved to Senior Estates in Woodburn. He moved to Newberg in 2018.

In 1955 he married Lula Mae Ellison and adopted her two-year old daughter Shirley, whose father passed when she was nine months old. He also worked 17 years at Metropolitan Printing as a typesetter and compositor, co-owned B and B Litho for one year, and worked as a production manager, estimator, and building partner for PEP Printing, which became Premier Press, for nine years of dramatic growth. He retired in 1988.

He was a tenor saxophonist in bands that played for school dances and military functions.

A veteran of the Korean Conflict, he served in Army intelligence as a photo interpreter 12 miles from the front line.

He was a master woodworker who repurposed a printing machine to produce hardwood cameo engravings.
