Obituary

Clyde Bauman passed away in the farmhouse where he was born and lived his entire life. He always joked that he'd never gotten far in life. Measured in miles, that was true, but he made a lot of friends beyond the family farm.Clyde grew up on the farm originally purchased by his Grandmother Elizabeth Bauman in 1895. He enjoyed being a farmer. He liked trying different crops. He grew a large field of dandelions for making wine back in the 1950s. He tried kiwi fruit a little later. He cared for the kiwi for years before the first fruit was ready to harvest. That year there happened to be a big freeze. The kiwi froze and died. Not deterred, he re-planted and those kiwi still produce on his farm.Buckwheat was another favorite crop. There was no money in it, he was fond of saying, but "someone has to do it." People would stop by for a few pounds of buckwheat seed and stay to talk. He sold peaches, apples and potatoes the same way - making a few bucks and new friends. Those were the humble beginnings of Bauman Farms.Clyde was a proud Grange member for over 50 years. Each Grange meeting he gave a farm report. Some of his best were short. The good news is that the price of apples this year is really high. The bad news is that there aren't any to speak of, he'd report. Or "the newspaper quoted a berry farmer as saying they were making a good profit this year. I can't for the life of me figure out what berry farmer they found to say that."He married Margaret Fisher May 1, 1943. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary last May. They have eight children; daughters Jan (Pete) Petroski, Woodburn, Carol (Rich) Friz, Portland and Pat (Ed) Sinner, La Grande; sons Don (Pam) Silverton, Larry (Linda) Phoenix AZ, Tom (Lea) Woodburn, Rick (Barb) Gervais, and Jerry of Woodburn. There are 26 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.Services will be Friday, January 3, 2014 at St Luke's Catholic Church in Woodburn.
