Benjamin was born in Gwendolyn, OR to Benjamin and Christina Phillips. He had two siblings; Margie Kramer, and Elmer Phillips who are both deceased. He grew up in Portland and joined the army at the age of seventeen, serving in both World War II and Korean War. Upon returning home to Portland he married Lella Shurte. They had four sons. They later divorced, leaving Ben to raise the boys. He loved to camp and it was while camping at Beverly Beach he met Dianne Fetters and her three sons. The two soon after were married; joining the two families. They bought a small farm in Canby where they lived until Ben's retirement from Oregon Steel Mill where he worked for thirty-seven years. Upon retirement they volunteered with the Fish and Game Service for five years. The couple then moved to Woodburn, where they both resided for their remaining years. Ben enjoyed camping, the outdoors, his flower garden, and his dogs. He was quite handy around the house, making improvements to his home. He will be remembered for being the kindest, nicest guy there was, and his mean dish of chicken and dumplings. He is survived by his sons Mike (Mary Kay), Doug, and Steve (Karen); stepsons Ron (Theresa) and Tony Fetters; daughter-in-law Kellye Fetters; his eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Dianne, his son Todd, and stepson Darrel Fetters. His charming character will be missed by his family and friends.
