Obituary

Ardell Jean Colson was born on a farm near Humboldt, Minnesota, located near the Canadian border, on May 17, 1923 to Ingrid and Swan Colson. Her father, Swan, was a Swedish immigant who arrived at Ellis Island at the age of 24. Attending country school near Kennedy, Minnesota, Ardell graduated from Karlstad High School in 1942. While working as a nurse's aid at the Hallock Hospital, she met Richard Higgin who had just completed his four year service in the United States Navy. They married on May 1, 1946. Richard and Ardell owned and published two newspapers, the Cosmos Sun and the Lake Lillian Crier for 18 years and were very active in community activities in Cosmos, Minnesota. They moved to Bend, Oregon in 1972 and to Salem, Oregon in 1985, both times to be with family. Ardell kept active in church and Bible study activities, worked as a waitress in her sister-in-law's cafe named 'The Koffee Korner', worked at Current Outlet, and volunteered at the Oregon State Capitol Gift Shop. She loved to walk, exercise, and bowl. Richard passed away in 1987. Ardell married Rollin Chase in 1999 and they resided in the senior estates in Woodburn, Oregon. They enjoyed traveling to the Panama Canal, Alaska, Hawaii, New Orleans, and many other interesting places. They worshipped and were active in service at the Soul's Harbor Nazarene Church in Woodburn. After a heroic battle with cancer, Ardell passed away in her home on November 19th. Ardell is survived by her husband, Rollin Chase; son Byron Higgin of Minneota, Minnesota; daughters Caryn Chilton of Gresham, Oregon and Beth Higgin of Sherwood, Oregon; stepdaughter Roxylee Rumgay of Bend, Oregon; and stepson Ron Chase of Donald, Oregon. Ardell and Rollin have nine grandchildren and 11great- grandchildren - all of whom Ardell loved dearly. Ardell is preceded in death by her parents Swan and Ingrid, her first husband Richard, her brother Leo, and her sister Eunice. Those who knew Ardell knew the passion she had for her faith, family, and friends. She lived her life with integrity and honesty, loving unconditionally, leading by example, and she always encouraged and elevated all who crossed her path. Ardell Jean Colson Higgin Chase devoted her life to being a faithful child of God, daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She succeeded well. Memorial services for Ardell will be held at 1 pm on Friday, November 30th at Soul's Harbor Nazarene Church in Woodburn, Oregon. A private family interment will take place at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Donations may be made in Ardell's name to Soul's Harbor Nazarene Church in Woodburn or to Odyssey Hospice of Portland, Oregon.
