Walter F. Bethune December 1, 1926 - January 26, 201 Walter F. Bethune was born in Glenmora, Louisiana on December 1, 1926 to Walter F. Bethune and Hazel Wensley Bethune. After traveling across the country with his family during the depression they settled in Klamath Falls, Oregon. He attended grade school and high school in Klamath Falls, where he played football in the state championship in 1943. Walter left high school and enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. He graduated from U.S. Navy Gunner School in Missouri and from Flight School in Memphis, Tennessee. When the war ended, with assistance from the GI Bill he enrolled at University of Idaho in Moscow where he played football. Walter continued his undergraduate studies at University of Miami in Oxford, Ohio where he joined the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. He transferred to Oregon State University graduating in 1946. Walter enrolled at the University of Oregon Dental School in Portland, where he met dental hygiene student Patricia Neubert, from Grant High School. Walter and Patty married on Valentines Day 1955 and settled in Lake Oswego, Oregon. Walter practiced dentistry in Lake Oswego for over 34 years where he was active in the community including Lake Grove Presbyterian Church, Oswego Lake Country Club and Lake Oswego Rotary. Walter was involved in the dental community and served on the chairs for the Clackamas County Dental Society. He also volunteered his time to the Clackamas County Indigent Clinic. Walter stayed active in the U.S. Navy Reserve participating in War College and did active duty training on the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk. He proudly achieved the rank of Captain in the U.S. Naval Reserves. Walter retired from dentistry in 1989 and enjoyed traveling and sailing with Patty. In March of 1995, shortly after celebrating 40 years of marriage, Patty passed away. Traveling and family filled his time until he remarried Wilma Arbuckle in 2004. He is survived by five children and their spouses, Brenda (Jerry), Mimi, Lauchlin (Sharon), Anna (Wayne), Meg (Michael); nine grandchildren Keith, Miranda, Heather, Alex, Alysha, Spencer, Kooper, Emmett and Audrey.There will be a memorial celebration of Walter's life February 11, 2013 at 1030 hours at Lake Grove Presbyterian Church, Lake Oswego, Oregon and a Military Honors Internment at Willamette National Cemetery.Contributions in his memory may be sent to Lake Grove Presbyterian Church or Wounded Warrior Project.
