Evelyn Mallatt was born on February 27, 1934 to Clarence â??Red' and Alma Mallatt in Clatskanie, Oregon, the youngest of four daughters. In 1948, Evelyn met Tom Fender, a Tennessee Hillbilly who'd come to Oregon to try his hand at a new life out west. They married June 14, 1950. Their first child, Robert, was born later in 1950 and twins, Kathryn and Joseph, followed shortly after in 1952. She and Tom moved to several different places in the local area and to Tennessee, eventually landing at their current home in Woodburn in 1976.Evelyn worked at The Smart Shop, a clothing store in Woodburn. Later on, she opened her own clothing store: Ev's Clothes Corner. In 1985, she and Tom bought a garbage business in Florence, Oregon with their eldest son and his wife, where Evelyn managed the finances until they sold the business in 1998. She also worked for Earl Dohman's office in a number of capacities for over twenty years, until she retired.Evelyn discovered many of the gifts that God gave her through her time spent at church and in fellowship with others. Most notably: her wondrous singing voice, her knack at writing stories, and a true talent for writing and directing musical programs and plays. While she had countless joys in life, it's safe to say her most treasured joys were her devoted love of Jesus and her unconditional love and care for her husband and the rest of her family. Considering the scope of her life and how so much of it surrounded her family, it's only fitting that she went up to Heaven surrounded by those that loved her so much. She died at home on the morning of July 3rd, 2013, one week after being diagnosed with brain cancer. She was 79.Evelyn is survived by her husband, Tom, of 63 years; her children, Bob Fender (Chris) of Madras, Kathy Ward (Dennis) of Gervais, and Joe Fender (Debbie) of Wilsonville; her sisters, Mary Lou Peznecker of Oregon City and Delorah Hall of Santa Cruz, California; her six grandchildren, Aimee Beachy, Thomas Fender II, Jason Fender, Shawna Dennis, Jack Fender, and Amber Petersen; eleven great-grandchildren, and countless other family and friends. She was preceded in death by another sister, Alene McDonald. Arrangements by Simon-Cornwell Colonial Chapel.
